Word From the Principal

Welcome to Term 2 - We are Back in Action!

We are back in action and it is fantastic! Sometimes you don’t realise how much you miss something until it returns. I’ve loved being out and about in the playground talking with students and seeing seniors and juniors enjoying the grounds and time together. We met on the basketball court on the first day of school and the tamariki were so quiet getting ready I didn’t hear or see them and came out of the office to a lovely surprise! This term we have a focus on Honesty and Truthfulness. We will unpack this more as the term progresses. I shared about one aspect of this being honesty towards one’s own learning needs and willingness to seek help and support. This learner agency is an important part of learning, and being ready, willing, and able to engage in the work of figuring something new out. It’s been great to visit classes and see students showing their Can-Do attitude, and their Best Always.

Our office administrator Mrs Susanne Irwin will be on leave after Friday 1st of July returning Thursday 28th of July (with the school holiday in between). We wish her well on her long flight to visit family in Germany.

Our Deputy Principal Mrs Rose Powley will be on leave after Friday 20th of May for the remainder of the term. But never fear - I am not going on leave and will be here to hold the fort… Mrs Powley has trained me well and while she is away the school will be supported by three team leaders - Mrs Leanne Hale, Whaea Lisa Fell, and Mrs Maria Shoebridge. Along with myself they will form the leadership team. There may be some matters that Mrs Powley or myself may have usually worked through, that will be passed on to these team leaders as we distribute the responsibilities and support each other to work to our Best Always, with the resources available.

Welcome to the team Ritchell

A warm welcome to Miss Ritchell Gantalao who will be joining Kaharoa School to teach Year 7 and 8 from early June in Tōtara Rākau. Miss Rachel Seamer started us off this year on a short term contract, knowing she was due in America in June 2022. Rachel has served the school well and we will miss her, but wish her all the best for her adventure overseas!

Ritchell has been working at Rotorua Intermediate and Mokoia Intermediate the past two years. I look forward to having her positive and encouraging personality in the school and working alongside her to continue the great learning progress for students in Tōtara Rākau.

This year we hosted an internal event for EPro8. 28 Kaharoa Can-Do-Kids worked in 6 teams to solve the various challenges presented. Winners will represent the school at the upcoming inter-school event.
