The Ministry of Education expects students to attend school regularly, as consistent attendance supports learning progress, wellbeing, and social connection. We strongly encourage families to plan travel during school holiday periods wherever possible.
However, we also recognise that travel and family experiences can provide valuable learning opportunities that support children’s understanding of the world, culture, history, language, environment, and real-life problem solving. Where a family has booked to travel during term time, the school may consider approving a period of distance learning rather than marking the student absent. This is also possible for longer absences for medical reasons (longer than 3 days).
For travel longer than 3 school days, families are required to seek approval from the school at least 2 weeks prior. Requests should be sent to principal@kaharoa.school.nz
