Lamb, Calf, Chicken & Kid Day - Friday, 16 October 2020

posted: Thu, September 24, 2020

Lamb, Calf & Chicken Day is an annual event at Kaharoa School and this year it will be held on Friday, 16 October 2020.

The purpose of this traditional event and the weeks leading up to it is to give children of all ages the opportunity to learn about caring and developing relationships with animals and the responsibilities that come with it.

They will experience the ‘small country’ feel of our school and it will provide them with excellent life skills.

There will be several categories your child can enter this year’s competition.

In the baby animal section, they can choose between a calf, lamb, kid or chicken. Any of these must be born between 20 July and 25 September.

Prizes are being awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each of junior, intermediate and senior section. The criteria that children and their animals (calves, lambs & kids) are being judged on will look at skills in leading, calling, care & attention.

Chickens will be judged on their presentation & care and children will be tested on their knowledge about their animal. If they enter an ex-battery hen, the judges will look at the most recovered animal.

First placed children will be awarded trophies, which will have the child’s name engraved to be remembered in future years.

For the first time this year, we are introducing a ‘veteran animal’ section, where children can bring their adult pet sheep, goat or chicken to show. No other animals other than those mentioned please. This section is awarded for participation only, there will be no judging.

We will also be holding a pre-school ring this year where children can enter a lamb, kid, calf or chicken with the following categories being judged: best dressed, fluffiest, cleanest, happiest & best behaved.

On the day:

Registrations are open from 8.45-9.30am on the back field, where the children are issued with a registration number. (Parking is on the field at the back of the school which can be entered through the gate next to the school carpark).

Judges briefing is at 9.30am in the staffroom and judging begins at 10am.

As soon as all animals in every section have been judged, we will start the prize giving.

The event should conclude at around 2pm.

If a child comes 1st or 2nd in an event for the lamb or calf section, they are eligible for Group Day which is held at a different school every year.

Registrations for this event is at our school office. Any child can also enter the open rings on the day with their lambs, kids & calves.

Our PTA is once again playing a vital part in the organisation of the event, without this amazing team, we simply wouldn’t be able to run it. A big thanks to all in advance!

In addition, every year we receive great support from a variety of sponsors that assist with animal feed, docking of lambs, spot prizes and other donations, which we are very grateful for.

If you are interested in rearing an animal but don’t have a source, please see the attached information that Sarah Paterson from the PTA compiled. She connected with local farmers who are kindly offering to provide animals for the children to raise and care for.

Should you require further information regarding the rearing of animals, please refer to the relevant booklets that are attached below.
