Last Friday Room Kauri went for our first Forest Friday trip. The sun was out and we had a wonderful time exploring the forest and learning in the great outdoors. Some of us built huts, climbed trees, made mudslides, transformed into mountain climbers, and even mountain goats!

Covid-19 meant the CBOP Cross Country event looked different this year with participating schools running their own timed events and sending in the results to Sport Bay of Plenty to collate. Our Beach Volleyball Court and BBQ Area was officially opened on Wednesday, 1 July. PTA and Board Member, Celia Grant gave a lovely speech (parts of which are reproduced below) introducing the facility and thanking all those who contributed to the project then current Kaharoa student Hunter Weaver and Councillor Fisher Wang cut the ceremonial ribbon and declared the Community Recreational Resource OPEN. Thank you very much to all who came to celebrate with us, in particular those who represented our supporters, both financial and those who donated materials, their time and energy in helping with construction. Congratulations to our past Kaharoa School Board Chair, Don Hammond, who has been elected as Board Chair to the New Zealand Centre for Gifted Children (NZCGC). Don’s (and wife Andrea’s) now grown-up children Rob, Isabel and Emily all attended Kaharoa School along with their Grandmother Ann Smith who worked as a valued staff member in our library. Congratulations to the following children who received the Stepping Up Awards for their class in Term 1 and to Lucy Barker, our Wheel Recipient.
A huge congratulations to Wiremu, who won the Aniwell Sportsmanship Award at Land Rover Horse of the Year 2020. Equestrian Sports NZ said on their Facebook post, “Wiremu consistently displays great sportsmanship, a willingness to help and learn and is an excellent young horseman”.
Room Kowhai went down to the Kokako Bush Block to enjoy the trees, birds, insects, and fungi.
